Role of Zinc Supplementation in Childhood Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children less than 5 years age. Zinc is an important micronutrient that supports normal functioning of immune system. Chronic zinc deficiency in children can result into impaired immune function, leading to susceptibility to infections.  Zinc supplementation has been found to have prophylactic as well as therapeutic role in childhood acute respiratory tract infections including pneumonia.
