  • The incremental risk of T2DM beginning at a BMI of 18.5 kg/m2 was assessed in urban Asian Indians using the IHW study data
  • The T2DM risk increased linearly from a BMI of 18.5 kg/m², each 1-unit BMI increase raised T2DM odds by 28% (p<.0001)
  • This challenges the 23 kg/m² threshold & calls for earlier preventive strategies, this BMI-HbA1c link in normoglycemic subjects needs to be confirmed in longitudinal studies.

  • The study used the GBD 2021 data to assess global trends in severe periodontitis
  • From 1990 to 2021, global incident cases of severe periodontitis rose from 50.8M (95% UI: 39.6–59.2M) to 89.6M (95% UI: 79.1–101.0M)
  • DALY & incidence rates increased slightly with EAPCs of 0.077 & 0.027
  • Despite public health efforts, the burden remains high, requiring stronger prevention targeting poor hygiene, smoking, & diabetes.

Gut.
A pooled analysis of three cohorts found that lean MASLD patients (<25 kg/m²) faced increased risks of liver-related events (HR 2.14), liver-related mortality (HR 2.31), all-cause mortality (HR 1.26), and CVD mortality (HR 1.22) compared to non-lean MASLD. Hepatocellular carcinoma and extrahepatic cancer risks were similar, while incident cardiovascular events were slightly lower (HR 0.89).

COPD patients recovering from sepsis are more vulnerable to viral infections at 1 year than those without sepsis, including RSV (HR 3.30), influenza (3.20), varicella-zoster virus (3.05), cytomegalovirus (2.10), and herpes simplex virus (1.94). Vaccination reduced infection risk by 24-32% for varicella-zoster virus, RSV, and influenza (HR 0.67-0.72). Findings stress the need for targeted preventive strategies.
