Peak Flow Meter (Cipla) Compared To Wright's Peak Flow Meter

Objective

  • To compare the Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) values obtained by peak flow meter (Peak Flow Master*, Cipla Ltd., India) with the Wright's peak flow meter (UK).

Patients and Methods

  • Randomized, open-label, four period, crossover study.
  • 24 healthy and asthmatic subjects aged 18 years and above were included and were asked to perform 3 PEF maneuvers in two randomly picked Cipla's peak flow meters (CA and CB) and two randomly picked Wright's peak flow meters (WA and WB).
  • The sequence of the use of devices was randomized, and the highest PEF value obtained with each device was used to compare PEF values within and between the devices.

Results

  • Analysis in healthy and asthmatic subjects did not show significant differences in mean PEF values obtained between Cipla's peak flow meters and Wright's peak flow meters (4.37 ± 10.6 vs. 0.62 ± 12.3 L/min; both p values >0.05).
  • There were no differences in mean PEF values in the range of 300-500L/min and >500L/min between the two devices.
  • There were no mechanical problems faced during the entire study period for both the devices.

Conclusion

  • Cipla's peak flow meter is robust and shows PEF values that are comparable with the Wright's peak flow meter.

*Peak Flow Master is now known as Breathe-o-meter.
