Fluticasone + Salmeterol is More Effective than High Dose Fluticasone in Indian Asthmatics
Objective
- To compare efficacy of Fluticasone + Salmeterol (Seroflo; 100/50 mcg; Cipla Ltd., India) combination versus doubling the dose of Fluticasone (200 mcg; Cipla Ltd., India).
Patients and Methods
- Randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, multicentre study.
- Asthmatic subjects aged 18 years and above.
- 115 subjects were included and randomised to a 12 weeks treatment with Fluticasone 200 mcg b.i.d. or Fluticasone + Salmeterol 100/50 mcg b.i.d.
Results
- There was significant increase in morning PEF (mean difference: 40L/min; p = 0.006) & FEV1 (mean difference: 0.17L; p=0.008) with the Fluticasone + Salmeterol group compared to high dose Fluticasone at 12 weeks.
- Fluticasone + Salmeterol provided better control on daytime and night-time symptoms.
- Patients in the Fluticasone + Salmeterol group were more likely to have rescue free days (27% increase).
Conclusion
- Fluticasone + Salmeterol combination provides better asthma control compared to doubling the dose of Fluticasone.
-
Both the treatments were well tolerated.
