There are still patients with epilepsy that are refractory to established antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Newer AEDs have unique and multiple mechanisms of actions, which allows the development of various effective and rational combinations. This slide set enumerates the epilepsy treatment goals, AED selection criteria, need for newer AEDs and their early use in treatment, problems associated with older AEDs along with clinical benefit of newer generation AEDs.
