Rifaximin is a non absorbable antibiotic designed to act within the lumen of the digestive tract. It’s broad spectrum makes is well suited for the management of diarrhea that often is the result of infection by numerous enteropathogens. Rifaximin was approved in 2004 by the USFDA for the treatment of traveler’s diarrhea. In over 18 years of clinical use no resistance has been reported with this antibiotic. As it acts topically, the potential for systemic side effects are limited. This slide set discusses diarrhea, rifaximin, mechanism of action, efficacy and safety in diarrhea.
